The metropolitan Atlanta area is home to: the Grammy Award winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus; two renowned historical chamber groups, the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and the New Trinity Baroque; and to notable musicians such as conductors Robert Spano and Predrag Gosta, the late Robert Shaw, countertenor David Daniels, bass Jason Hardy, and others.

Pop, rock, and metal

Atlanta has also produced rock and pop music singers, such as The Black Crowes, Shawn Mullins, The Changelings, alternative metal band Sevendust, sludge metal band Mastodon, ska/punk band Treephort, comedy-core pioneers Attractive Eighties Women, Maserati, post-rock band Light Pupil Dilate, dream-pop band Seely, rock bands Uncle Green (a.k.a 3 Lb. Thrill), Injected, City Sleeps, Collective Soul and Third Day, the folk-pop Indigo Girls, Butch Walker, and was a proving ground for Connecticut-born pop-rock-blues musician John Mayer.

Other groups prominent in Atlanta included Guadalcanal Diary, Love Tractor, Swimming Pool Q's, Dream So Real, Incarceri 9, and Arms Akimbo.

In the early 1980s, Atlanta was the home of a thriving pop and new wave music scene featuring such bands as The Brains, The Producers, The Raves (band), Baby and the Pacifiers, The Razor Boys, The Neuz, The Desperate Angels, Samurai Catfish and Heathen Girls to name a few. Justin Bieber recently moved to Atlanta to start his music career and now lives there. Atlanta is also the home of Grammy Award winning artist and songwriter Van Hunt.

The Dirty South style of hip-hop emerged in part from Atlanta artists such as Outkast and Goodie Mob. More recently, rapper/producer Lil Jon has been a driving force behind the party-oriented style known as crunk. Atlanta is also home to multi-platinum rappers Ludacris, Bobby V, Ciara, B5 aka Audio, Young Jeezy, Lil Jon and T.I., as well as B.o.B, Lloyd, Gorilla Zoe, Big Boi, Andre 3000, Dolla, Young Dro, Pastor Troy, Crime Mob, Lil Scrappy, Ying Yang Twins, Dem Franchise Boys, D4L, Yung Joc, Nivea, Usher, Monica, Jermaine Dupri, Ciara, Janelle Monae, Cee-lo Green, Keri Hilson, Street Runnaz Click[1], The-Dream and Cherish. The first hip-hop/rap artist in Atlanta to reach Gold Record record status was MC Shy D (Peter Jones) who did it in 1988 with the song entitled "Shake it" who was at the time signed to controversial southern rap label Luke Records, run by Luther Campbell aka "Uncle Luke"
